CBI/Pearson education and skills survey 2015

The eighth CBI education and skills survey, run in partnership with Pearson, was conducted against the backdrop of strengthening economic growth and rising employment. The survey provides a guide to trends in business opinion and practice across a wide range of education and skills issues.

The survey was conducted in spring 2015, with responses received form more than 300 organisations, collectively employing more than 1.2 million people.

The ninth CBI education and skills survey, run in partnership with Pearson, provides an authoritative guide to trends in business opinion, practice and future plans across a wide range of education and skills issues.

The report demonstrates that there is a growing demand amongst businesses for people with higher-level skills alongside widespread concern about being able to recruit the people and skills needed – something which is felt across the whole UK.

Recent studies indicate that a variety of challenges in the business environment hinder further inflow of investment in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Lack of skills and limited human resources, limited access to financial services and a discouraging regulatory environment, along with anticipated challenges related to regional economic integration place critical constraints on businesses.

This report summarizes the results of a national enterprise survey; desk reviews on issues which concern enterprises in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic; and findings from consultations with the private sector and key stakeholders. Issues under review include the following:
-skills education and training;
-access to finance;
-the legal and regulatory environment;
-anticipated challenges related to the AEC, or Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Community 2015.

ILO

The International Labour Organization is the tripartite U.N. agency that promotes Decent Work through employment, social security, labour standards and social dialogue. Its work on skills development is guided by the conceptual framework on Skills to improve productivity, employment growth, and development agreed in 2008 by representatives of Governments, Employers’ Associations and Workers’ Associations. Research, policy advice, and pilot projects and technical cooperation programmes to apply good practices in different circumstances across its 185 member States aims to boost the employability of workers, the productivity and competitiveness of enterprises, and the inclusiveness of economic growth. This report underlines the challenge before policy makers, enterprises, workers and those that represent them, in navigating the transformative technological changes in Asian labour markets in a way that is socially and economically sustainable.

The report presents a detailed analysis of how technology is transforming five key labour-intensive and economically prominent sectors in ASEAN: the automotive and auto parts; electrical and electronics; textiles, clothing and footwear; business process outsourcing; and retail sectors. It also highlights findings from extensive enterprise and student surveys as well as stakeholder interviews conducted in ASEAN and beyond. It is clear that technologies - both current and forthcoming - will increase productivity, render some occupations obsolete and create new ones. The real question lies in whether ASEAN can take advantage of the benefits technology offers and if it can also adequately prepare its workforce.

The world is experiencing an unprecedented acceleration in technological advancement and implementation. Indeed, profound shifts are taking place – entire sectors are accommodating these innovations, rendering several human-performed occupations redundant. In the near future, these positions may be eliminated entirely. At the same time, other jobs are experiencing a rapid increase in demand, and some occupations are revising the skill sets they traditionally require.

This report seeks to understand the implication of computerized technology for five Asian economies - Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam - by assessing types of occupations that have a high probability of being automated.

This publication addresses the alarming situation concerning skills shortages in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the EU. This lack of talent will have severe consequences not only on the competitiveness of individual companies but also on the economy at large. BUSINESSEUROPE's members consider shortages of STEM-skilled people to be one of the key obstacles to economic growth in the years to come. Moreover, it hampers the potential of European business to contribute finding solutions to modern challenges, like climate change and the ageing of the population. Companies across the EU have taken actions in order to increase the supply of STEM-skilled workers. However, they cannot do this alone. A stronger commitment and more joint efforts are needed from national governments and education providers.

This report presents the findings of the employer-led project on the cost-effectiveness of apprenticeship schemes – making the business case for apprenticeships, funded by the European Commission and led by BUSINESSEUROPE. The project aims to explore the business case for apprenticeships by analysing what makes a cost-effective apprenticeship scheme for employers in the ICT, commerce and engineering sectors. It also looks at the broader benefits that apprenticeships bring for enterprises. Bringing together these two aspects, it considers the potential reforms that are needed to make systems more cost-effective to increase employer engagement.

This report provides an overview and analysis of the experiences of Bulgaria; Czech Republic; Estonia; Finland; France; Greece; Hungary; Ireland; Italy; Latvia; Poland; Portugal; Slovakia; Spain; and UK and identifies a set of general recommendations to inspire national reforms that will improve the functioning of apprenticeship systems and increase employer engagement. In providing a unique employer perspective this study supports possible future joint work on apprenticeships by the EU social partners.

Globally, nearly 68 million young women and men are looking for and available for work,  and an estimated 123 million young people are working but living in poverty. The number who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) stands at 267 million, a majority of whom are young women. Significantly, young people are three times as likely as adults (25 years and older) to be unemployed.

Skills development is a primary means of enabling young people to make a smooth transition to work. A comprehensive approach is required to integrate young women and men in the labour market, including relevant and quality skills training, labour market information, career guidance and employment services, recognition of prior learning, incorporating entrepreneurship with training and effective skills forecasting. Improved basic education and core work skills are particularly important to enable youth to engage in lifelong learning as well as transition to the labour market.

In today’s economy, young adults are increasingly disconnected from employment at a time when the business community is in dire need of talent. Half of employers are unable to fill vacant positions and only 11% of employers feel newly credentialed graduates are ready for work. Failure to address this challenge has resulted in record youth unemployment rates that at times were double the national unemployment rate. The cost to society is lost taxes, growing entitlements, and missed chances for advancing economic opportunity.

This paper explores how employers and employer associations can leverage business-facing intermediaries as talent orchestrators to manage their human capital needs and scale youth employment efforts. It can also serve as a guide for how existing intermediaries can improve and scale in partnership with employers. First, the paper defines business-facing intermediaries and introduces a set of design principles for how this group can serve as talent orchestrators. Then it investigates how business-facing intermediaries are providing new opportunities for employers and business associations engaging in this space.
