Provides insight in trends and progress in vocational education and training (VET). In order to still attract young people in the 21st century, vocational education and training (VET) needs to keep up with the fast changes in the world of work. It needs to provide flexible entry points as well as to prepare for professional career opportunities that are attractive and upgradable. Having these developments in mind, this special edition of “Berufsbildung in Wissenschaft und Praxis” (Vocational Training in Research and Practice), generally referred to as BWP, is dedicated to some main trends in VET. The focus is on topics that are of relevance to stakeholders shaping VET in research, policy and practice at a European and international level. It projects the future size and shape of the labour market by considering employment prospects by industry, occupation, qualification level, gender and employment status. This edition of the report projects labour market information for the period 2014 to 2024.

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) is a publicly funded, industry-led organisation providing leadership on skills and employment issues across the UK.

This report provides a description of the Mitenna model for anticipation of long-term demand for labour and educational needs, complete with anticipation data relating to demand for labour up until 2025 as well as intake needs for education and training in the latter part of the 2010’s based on this data. In New Zealand, around 40 per cent of people in employment have literacy and numeracy skills below a level needed to use and understand the increasingly difficult texts and tasks that characterise a knowledge society and information economy, according to the Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALL) survey. However, there is limited information about how well employees’ skills match the literacy and numeracy practices they undertake in their jobs. The ALL survey data can provide some insight to this issue.

This report addresses the following questions: What are the different types of literacy and numeracy practices at work? How do these literacy and numeracy job practices relate to measures of job type and skill? What is the relationship between the skills, qualifications and experience of employees and the literacy and numeracy practices in their jobs? What is the extent of match and mismatch between the literacy skills of employees and their literacy and numeracy practices at work? What access do people with low skills and frequent literacy and numeracy job practices have to further education and training?

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)—an umbrella term for work-based activities undertaken by university students as part of their learning experience—is viewed by both industry and universities as a key means for increasing graduate work readiness. However, while employers question the work readiness of Australian graduates WIL is currently underutilised in Australia across many disciplines and industry sectors. Employers are particularly critical of the inability of graduates to link the theoretical aspects of their degree with the practical realities of work.

Within that context, this report provides new information on WIL from the perspective of employers. It identifies: the extent to which employers participate in WIL; the industries in which it is most common; the conditions that support their participation; and the value they attach to the WIL experiences of those they employ. The report also provides evidence of the barriers, benefits and enablers to employer participation in WIL.

Eight out of 10 of the world’s working poor who live on US $1.25 per day live in rural areas, where many are caught in vulnerable employment, especially in agriculture.Flourishing rural areas are vital to regional and national development. Yet, rural economies tend to face a wide range of challenges that urban areas are more likely to overcome. These include access to transportation, sanitation and health services, and a consumer base in close proximity to support small and medium enterprise development. Women and men working in rural areas also face difficulties associated with a paucity of economic opportunities, under investment, poor infrastructure and public services, including education, and, in many cases, weak governance and underdeveloped markets.

Education, entrepreneurship, and physical and social infrastructure all play an important role in developing rural regions. Skills are central to improving employability and livelihood opportunities, reducing poverty, enhancing productivity and promoting environmentally sustainable development.

Globally, nearly 68 million young women and men are looking for and available for work,  and an estimated 123 million young people are working but living in poverty. The number who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) stands at 267 million, a majority of whom are young women. Significantly, young people are three times as likely as adults (25 years and older) to be unemployed.

Skills development is a primary means of enabling young people to make a smooth transition to work. A comprehensive approach is required to integrate young women and men in the labour market, including relevant and quality skills training, labour market information, career guidance and employment services, recognition of prior learning, incorporating entrepreneurship with training and effective skills forecasting. Improved basic education and core work skills are particularly important to enable youth to engage in lifelong learning as well as transition to the labour market.

Employment Promotion Project supported by the German International Cooperation (GIZ). Over 60 per cent of young people in Sierra Leone are unemployed or underemployed. The lack of prospects – one of the principal causes of the lengthy civil war – is still considered a major threat to peace and stability in Sierra Leone by the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission.

Youth employment is a source of great economic potential. Yet in the twelve years since the end of the armed conflict, the country’s production and employment potential has still not been fully tapped, especially in the rural private sector. Skilled workers are in short supply. And after a decade of civil war and poor government funding, the education situation also remains inadequate. Around half of Sierra Leone’s population is unable to read or write. Without needs-oriented training and practical work experience, it is difficult for young people in particular to find productive employment. This factsheet presents the context, objectives, approach and achievements of the project ‘Promoting youth employment through agricultural development’ (2005-2016) commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Sierra Leone.
